Newton's Law of Democracy
CAST: Rajkummar Rao, Pankaj Tripathi, Anjali Patil, Raghubir Yadav, Sanjay Mishra
DIRECTION: Amit Masurkar
GENRE: Dark Comedy
Rating: 4/5 (Highly Recommended)
Newton Kumar (Rajkumar Rao) is modern day satyawadi harishchandra who goes by the rules and moral. The story is about his day as a presiding election officer in Chattisgarh's Naxal controlled area where Loksabha elections are to be conducted in a school. The director wants you to stay with the character and make you feel like you're in that zone experiencing events.
The electoral process has been shown in the simplest way for the audience to understand. Sanjay Mishra has a just 2 scenes in the movie but both scenes add value to the movie. In one of the scenes, Mishra tells Newton that he should not expect a thank you for his honesty and work he is supposed to do.
Newton is joined by Loknath ( Raghubir Yadav ), Shambhoo ( Mukesh Prajapati ) and Malko ( Anjali Patil ) a local Adivasi teacher. These characters are being taken care by Aatma Singh ( Pankaj Tripathi) armed officer who is responsible for safety in the Naxal affected area. The story moves slowly with each incident and event that take place in Newton's life on the election day. Newton is stubborn and refuses to compromise on any aspect of polling. It shows struggles between the principles of Newton and the practicality of the real world.
Everyone should watch the movie to takes cares about the democracy and believes in the rights of underprivileged part of the country. The movie at no point try to preach or give a social message, the director shows no biases towards army, Naxals, govt. or even the media. The screenplay of the movie written by Amit Masurkar and Mayank Tiwari is the biggest achievement. Though I didn't find the last scene relevant or doing justice to the entire film.
Don't care from which foreign film it's inspired from if you haven't watched either of them. It's also India's official entry for Oscars 2018.
